Where Does Messi Rank? Rodrigo De Paul Blind-Ranks Argentina’s All-Time Greats
The bond between Rodrigo De Paul and Lionel Messi is well-documented. From sharing the pitch for Argentina over the last eight years to reuniting at Inter Miami, De Paul has often been described as Messi’s “unofficial bodyguard.” But how does he view his close friend when compared against the absolute legends of Argentine football history?
In a recent “blind ranking” challenge, De Paul put his loyalty—and his football knowledge—to the test.
The Ultimate Argentina List
In a blind ranking exercise, a participant must assign a player to a numbered slot (1 through 5) without knowing which names will appear next. It is a true test of how one values current greats against historical icons.
De Paul navigated the challenge with a clear reverence for his country’s history. Here is how he stacked the deck:
-
1st Place: Lionel Messi
-
2nd Place: Diego Maradona
-
3rd Place: Angel Di Maria
-
4th Place: Sergio Aguero
-
5th Place: Javier Mascherano
A Nod to History, A Commitment to the Present
While De Paul’s decision to place Messi at the top of the list might seem obvious given their close friendship, his selection reveals the depth of respect he has for the legacy of the Albiceleste.
By placing the legendary Diego Maradona at second, De Paul acknowledged the immense history of Argentine football while cementing his belief that the current era—led by Messi—has reached the pinnacle of the sport. His inclusion of longtime teammates like Di Maria, Aguero, and Mascherano highlights the core group of players who defined a generation for the national team.
For De Paul, it seems the “bread is buttered” on the side of his captain, but his list serves as a perfect tribute to the legends who paved the way for Argentina’s recent dominance on the world stage.
